Weight and size:

  • Normal weight of a newborn: 2.5 - 4.5 kg
  • Average weight of a newborn: 3.5 kg
  • Under weight: below 2.5
  • Overweight: above 4.5 kg
  • Newborn loss 8 ounces weight in first 5 days. Then regain it
  • 1 month old baby weight: 4.2 kg

  • Normal size and length of new born: 19 - 20 inches 
  • Normal size or length of 1 month old baby : 21.1 inches

Sensory development:

  • Eyesight: can see objects at distance of 8 - 10 inches 
  • Hearing: middle ear is full of fluid so baby can hear high pitched sounds 
  • Touch: light touch and little tickling 
  • Speech: cry is the only source of communication at the age of 1 month 

Motor development:

  • Head control is not developed properly 
  • During tummy time may place head in one direction 
  • Primitive reflexes like rooting and grasping reflex is still present
  • Arms and legs movements are purposeless

Social development:

  • Attached to the primary caregiver
  • May starts smiling 

Baby's daily routine:

  • Feeding: 1 month old baby feeds after every 2 hours and may have long sessions of feeding. You can only give formula milk or breastfeed.
  • Poop: first five days baby excrete meconium after that baby's poop wil become bright yellow to brown (normally). Change diaper after every 3-4 hours. 
  • Playing time: softly touch your baby, give a massage, do some light exercise like cycling of legs, talk or sing to your baby and use some bright colour toys for your baby. Do tummy time. 
  • Sleep time: 1 month old baby sleeps 14 to 17 hours a day.
